Here's what one 5th grade student had to say about the class's most recent field trip:
Sound to Sea

Recently, the fifth grade at Episcopal Day School went on a field trip to Sound to Sea. Sound to Sea is a program on Bogue Bank, which is a barrier island off the coast of North Carolina. We groggily got on the bus at 7:00 a.m. on October 7th. We took one big bus that was with Kirk Tours, and we all agreed it was very comfortable. After about four hours we arrived. By now, everyone was wide awake and ready to go. We got a warm welcome from Travis and Atiqah, the instructors that would be helping us.
On that first day, we had three classes, Barrier Island Ecology, Sound/Salt Marsh, and First in Flight. Everyone agreed that they were all spectacular. At First in Flight, we learned a lot about birds, from a game show and dressing up like the different birds. They even brought in a real hawk and owl! There was one part of First in Flight that was not about birds, it was about air pressure. They showed us amazing examples of how pressure changes.
On the next day, one of our classes was squid dissection. We paired up with a partner and listened to instructions on how to dissect the squid. We learned a lot and even got to write our name in squid ink! When we were done, we threw the bodies into the sound for the fish and seagulls to eat. It was a smart idea to keep the bodies from going to waste.
At Sound to Sea, there was a cafeteria that served great food. During meal time, the instructors collected ort. Ort is food scraps left over from a meal. They collected the ort and sent it to a landfill. They did this to show us how much food we were wasting. On our first day we had twenty two quarts of ort. On the last day we only had ½ quart of ort. It was quite an improvement. There were also people called watrons. One child from each table would come early and help set the tables and put out the food. Every child would get a chance to do this.
Sound to Sea is a great experience and fun for everyone. The Trinity center is the organization where Sound to Sea is located. The Trinity center has lots of other camps too. So, if you would like to have fun with your family or school, go to the Trinity center!
